My Journey to Reiki

To Touch, To Heal

To touch, in order to heal: That seems to be Bena’s lifetime calling. She first answered this calling 30 years ago, as a deep tissue massage therapist.

Her journey turned from healing others, to needing healing herself. While living in California, she was injured and told she would be a chronic pain sufferer for the rest of her life. Not the type of person who takes such news passively, Bena set out to change that prognosis— and her life.

Exploring the healing arts, Bena came upon many practitioners who used a variety of modalities. Some combined different techniques in a single session, which worked well for her. Bena went on to learn many different techniques: Chi Nei Tsang, Shiatsu, Reflexology and Craniosacral Therapy, among others. She tried combining these in various ways.

Bena developed an ability to read people’s healing needs. As she walked down the street, looking at the person in front of her, she thought, “Oh, look at the way his head sits on his shoulders. That is one messed up C-2.” Or she’d see someone walking with an odd gait and think “that hip is out of alignment. She’s going to be in trouble if she doesn’t get that taken care of.”

She continued to work with a variety of techniques. Craniosacral Therapy, for example, worked well with clients as a diagnostic tool and healing modality. This gentle approach also had relaxing and rejuvenating effects on her clients.

Her own search for healing brought Bena further along her path toward Reiki. In 1987, a few practitioners used Reiki to help her. However, the results were disappointing, and she became skeptical of its use for long-term healing. Reiki practitioners were not much regulated back then, and some, supposedly at a high level, were less adept than others.

So she strayed away from Reiki. But as Robert Frost says, “way leads onto way,” and by 2005, Bena’s detour led her to someone who would guide her steps more steadily toward Reiki, Nadsa De Monteiro. While accompanying Bena on her path, Nadsa became a Reiki Master/Teacher and a very powerful healer. She convinced Bena to take a Reiki class, and to give Reiki another chance.

Having been an energy worker for years, Bena found Reiki to be almost too gentle to be useful and had difficulty just letting the energy flow. She had been working for years, pushing energy and directing it to help heal people. She had to learn that Reiki works without such direction. With Reiki, the practitioner doesn’t so much direct the energy, as become a conduit for the Reiki energy, and the energy flows through the healer, to the one healing. Bena had yet to relinquish control, to become a conduit through which energy could flow—to lose her own ego. She agreed to take Nadsa’s Reiki I & II classes and receive her Reiki II Attunement.

After her Reiki II attunement, the energy did flow better. Bena was beginning to trust both the gentle power of Reiki energy, and herself as its conduit. But she had still further to go on her journey before her belief in Reiki as a long-term healing agent would congeal.

Nadsa believed in Reiki—and in Bena— and asked Bena to take a Leap of Faith. She encouraged her to go onto the Master/Teacher training, promising that once Bena got the Master Attunement she would understand her Teacher’s excitement and energy.

Four years later, in 2013, Bena came upon an amazing opportunity. Looking through The Reiki News Magazine, she spotted a notice about a Reiki Master/Teacher class, taught by Master/Teacher and founder of The International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT) and of The Center for Reiki Research, William Rand. William would teach the class in Glastonbury, UK—with the attunement within the ancient and mysterious Stonehenge. The idea of receiving her Reiki Master Attunement inside the stones of Stonehenge compelled Bena to journey to England. She somehow knew that the energy immersion experienced during an attunement inside these sacred stones would be overwhelming. And in fact, it was life-changing.

Now she was in England, at the Medieval Abby at Glastonbury. She felt as if she had stepped back in time— or outside of time. The lore around the Abby was present, whether or not King Arthur and Guinevere were actually buried there. Here she was in a sacred place with powerful—almost supernal— energy.

William Rand, the Master/Teacher, turned out to be very down-to-earth. He simply loved practicing and teaching Reiki. Bena soon understood why his life mission was to bring Reiki to as many people as he could reach. (Go figure!) His gentle personality and teaching techniques, his perseverance and personal stories of how Reiki changed his life resonated with her. After all, she also had stayed the course toward Reiki for more than a quarter of a century!

The class moved along almost too quickly for Bena. She loved it, and had arrived at a point in Reiki from which she could learn, heal – and even transform herself and others.

The night of the attunement at Stonehenge was magical. The path up to the sacred stones felt familiar, though she had never been there before. Something powerful and transformative had begun to happen.

She and the 23 other like-minded people walking that path together created a strong, palpable energy around them. During the attunement, the group rose to an even higher energy level. As she puts it, “the energy comes down and envelops you.” (The photos above, taken during the attunement, clearly reveal an energy vortex moving from a distance to where the attunement was taking place.) Each person in the group left those stones altered, and none would ever be the same.

Bena left England a few days later, knowing she had changed. Finally, she had assimilated the Reiki energy and learned to trust, rather than to direct it: Reiki knew where to go. She understood that now. She was ready to teach Reiki, to use Reiki, and to bring this amazing healing modality to others who would benefit from it.

One year later, in May of 2014, Bena found herself signed up for another class with Master/Teacher William Rand, again at Glastonbury. She would reach an even higher level of energy in this second class: Usui/Tibetan Reiki Ryoho Karuna Reiki.

Unbeknown to Bena, a new form of Reiki had unexpectedly revealed itself to William. It would ignite into a transformative and even more powerful Reiki energy, Holy Fire.

Holy Fire came quickly and unexpectedly into William Rand’s life; he was not seeking something so powerful and transformative. Bena knew that her Master Teacher followed what spirit directed him to do—and it directed him to bring down Holy Fire. (If you would like to read more about William’s experience)

This time at Stonehenge, Bena’s doubts evaporated. The attunement left her wholly at peace, yet remarkably energized. Though profound and powerful, Bena discovered that this form of Reiki does not vanquish free will. Rather, as one relinquishes control over Reiki energy, one also gains free will to use it.

Bena had reached the summit of her journey. She and the group of 26 like-minded souls emerged from Stonehenge imbued with a depth of inner peace that could come only from truly assimilating an ancient knowledge.

Bena’s journey has led to her own Reiki practice, SACRED RESONANCE HEALING. The sacred practices, symbols and guides imbued and experienced along the way resonate strongly within her. Trust and free will blend into one powerful, healing energy, which Bena channels and transfers to others, and she and her clients are free to accept or decline the guides that Reiki energy presents.

SACRED RESONANCE HEALING is growing, as more and more clients and students find her on their journeys. Reiki has infused her life—and theirs— with wonder, joy and happiness.

Bena’s journey continues. Perhaps yours will begin, or continue, with her.
